Turning Lead into Gold
We – you and I – are energetic beings.
Now before you write this article off and announce out loud ‘I know all this’, I invite you to reinvest the next 7 mins or so to read on…
When I mention the word energy, what comes to your mind? Running an epic marathon? Doing a whole yoga class of arm balances without tiring? Carrying around your thoughts as heavy baggage? Hang on, what?????
In physics, energy is described as the property of matter and radiation that is manifest as a capacity to perform work (such as causing motion or the interaction of molecules).
So if energy = matter that turns into an expression of work, then just for ten seconds count how many random thoughts go through your head.
Now multiply that by the matter is takes to process all that thinking, a lot of work for a little thought!
Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that dis-empowers them or one that can literally save their lives.
– Tony Robbins
Wow! So if the belief, the thought of “you can’t trust people” embeds itself deep into my subconscious, and I forget I put it there, this belief will continue to drive my experiences until I weed it out. How does it do this??
This old belief system lies in the dungeon of your mind and is collecting energy by expressing itself via your life and proving itself right!
So for example, there I am, quietly minding my own business, when out of nowhere BAM, someone lets me down, and my subconscious belief jumps up for a second and says, “see, I told you, people can’t be trusted”.
But hang on a second, if I am the creator of my reality, and responsible for only my reactions as opposed to the external environment which I literally have no control over, then how can I use my thought energy to over ride this old belief?
Let’s reflect on the energetic centres known as Chakra’s. Our chakras work with the energy currents of the human body, acting like a magnetic field. There are 7 main chakras, and each chakra resonates with the vibration of maturity, from simply surviving to tapping into our unlimited wisdom and expanding consciousness.
Your chakra’s radiate and receive energy constantly. If you hold negative thoughts, it creates imbalance in the associated chakra, heavy thought material.
So if I investigate this belief a little closer, people can’t be trusted, what is really going on here? It seems to melt down into a pot of fear, fear of being hurt by others, of being disconnected from unlimited source and being at the mercy of other people’s realities rather than one’s own. As the base chakra relates to issues around self-preservation (Muladhara) it begins to block the flow of energy as it is affected by this belief, which then turns into musculature holding patterns which we call tension.
So when a yoga teacher announces, “your issues are in your tissues” this is a glimpse into that dynamic.
The way we cope with stress usually falls into two categories: we either increase our energy and attention to fight the stress (perceived threat) or we decrease our energy to withdraw from the situation. This results in excessive or deficient coping strategies and an energetic body that is continually fighting or running from things it believes are happening, but is simply being run by a defunct belief system.
During meditation, the opportunities to begin to observe these thoughts and beliefs occurs in the stillness and awareness of breath. Once the continual stream of thinking begins to taper off, you will start to notice some re-occurring themes that continue to rise up. By witnessing these themes and allowing the experiences, thoughts and emotions to rise up without fighting or running from them, you literally give the thought attached to a certain belief a chance to discharge, resulting in one of those insight moments. Now you have some solid information about yourself, which is what we call in Yoga Self Awareness.
With this Self Awareness in hand, you are now able to create a new belief around the experience of trust. This new belief might be something like “I am safe, loved and protected in all experiences”.
This thought allows energy in rather than blocking it through the initial thought around fear.
So my little alchemists, the next time you notice a strong reaction rising up within, before diving into your habitual way of hanging onto a heavy emotional feelings, reflect, find what the root cause is deep down, and flip it around with useful beliefs that begin to stamp out the old ones.
It is a mark of soulfulness to be present in the here and now. When we are present, we are not fabricating inner movies. We are seeing what is before us.
